Growing mushrooms in a growing bed
What you need:
- Mushroom mycelium (grain spawn)
- Suitable growing location in the garden - shady, moist and preferably under vegetation.
- Growing bed with organic material, e.g. hardwood chips such as oak, birch or beech mixed with straw or straw pellets
- Any covering material (e.g. leaves or straw)
Step by step:
Mushrooms thrive best in shady and moist environments, preferably near trees and in soil that is moist but not waterlogged. Avoid places with direct sun for most of the day.
Prepare a bed with straw, sawdust or other substrate.
Mix the mycelium thoroughly with the substrate, water thoroughly and cover the bed with a layer of leaves or straw to retain moisture.
Keep the area moist by watering as needed, especially during dry periods. Avoid letting the substrate dry out, but also avoid letting it become soggy and waterlogged.
The mycelium can take several months (sometimes up to a year) to fully establish. When the mushrooms start to grow, harvest them carefully with a knife at the base.
